Dr. McDowell was named superintendent of Hastings Public Schools in April of 2020, and officially began on July 1, 2020. Hastings Public Schools, ISD #200 has approximately 4200 students, 650 staff, seven sites, and an operating budget of over $80 million.

Prior to joining the Hastings School District, Superintendent McDowell served as the assistant superintendent for Stillwater Schools. He began his career as a technology education teacher in Eau Claire, WI and for more than 25 years served in a variety of capacities with experience as a principal, assistant principal, technology coordinator, teacher, and coach. 

Superintendent McDowell holds a bachelor's degree in technology education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from The University of St. Thomas, a specialist degree in Educational Administration from Minnesota State-Mankato, and a doctorate in education from Saint Mary’s University. 

Locally, Dr. McDowell is a member of the Hastings Rotary and serves on the Board of Directors for United Way of Hastings. He is also on staff with Bethel University as an adjunct professor and advises doctoral students. Most recently he was named to the Association of Metropolitan School Districts (AMSD) Executive/Legislative team. 

Growing up as a three sport athlete, and playing trumpet through college, Dr. McDowell has an extreme appreciation for the balance between Academics, Arts, and Athletics. He tweets about our schools often and can be heard regularly on the KDWA, the local radio station, speaking to Maureen McNeary (Mo) about current “pockets of awesomeness” taking place throughout the Hastings Public Schools.
