Effective Monday September 14, 2020 free meals will now be available to all children enrolled in the Hastings ISD 200 school district. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced it will waive all fees for school meals through December 31, 2020, or earlier if funding runs out.

How will my student get their free meals?

When learning at school:

Breakfast and lunch will be available at no cost to students when they are in school or an in-person or hybrid learning schedule.

When learning at home:

Hastings Online Academy

A week’s supply of both breakfasts and lunches will be available for pickup on Monday (unless otherwise noted for holidays, etc.) from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Hastings District Office. Order Thursday at noon the week before.

Elementary Hybrid Learning

Order lunches for the days your students are not onsite only. Meals will be picked up by your student at their designated location at the end of the day.

Students in Cohort 1 (attending onsite Monday/Tuesday):  Order lunch on Monday by noon for students to take at the end of the day on Tuesday for Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.

Students in Cohort 2 (attending onsite Thursday/Friday) order lunches on Thursday by noon for students to take at the end of the day Friday for Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday.

Secondary Hybrid Learning

Students in Cohort 1 (attending onsite Monday/Tuesday):  Order lunch on Monday by noon to take at the end of the day on Tuesday for Wednesday, Thursday & Friday meals.

Students in Cohort 2 (attending onsite Thursday/Friday) order lunches on Thursday by noon to take at the end of the day Friday for Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday meals.

All lunches ordered will also include a breakfast.

Free meals will only be provided for scheduled school days. Meals will not be provided on holidays or scheduled days off.

Even though meals are free for the first few months of school, you still need to fill out your Free & Reduced Application form. This ensures you will have help paying for meals after December 31, and also helps you cover costs for other school-related activities. In addition, it grants our district access to federal funding to support our schools.  Complete the 2020-2021 Free & Reduced Meal Application online or contact Food Service to request one.

Please Note: Families MUST fill out a new application for benefits at the beginning of each school year or benefits will expire!

Order lunches for the days your students are not onsite, your student's lunch account will be charged accordingly (full pay, reduced, free).  Please order lunch for each day you require lunch.

2020-2021 Food Service & Nutrition Information

The National School Lunch and Breakfast meal pattern/regulations are in place for three learning (in-person/hybrid/distance) options.  

Student accounts will be charged for meals based on the determined category of approved eligibility (free, reduced and paid).  No cash will be allowed.

In the hybrid model, students/families may purchase meals for the days when their students are not attending in person.  The meals will be ordered online and available for your student to take home with them on the last day they attend in person.

For example:  a student attending on Monday/Tuesday, could order meals for Wednesday, Thursday & Friday to take with them at the end of the day on Tuesday and this would in the reverse as well, a student attending on Thursday/Friday could order meals for Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday of the following week and they would be sent with them on Friday.

Protecting your child in the lunchroom:
Our cafeterias will practice six foot social distancing and 50% capacity at all times.
Floor markings will be placed as visual reminders for social distancing.
Face coverings will be required until students are seated for eating.
Self-Service food items, like salad bars, will be discontinued.
Bar coded ID's will be used instead of pin pads for touchless checkout.
Paper trays and plastic silverware and disposable containers will be used at all sites.

Elementary Hybrid Specifics
Breakfast
Breakfast will be available as a "Grab & Go" option, with students picking-up food from the cafeteria and eating in predetermined spaces.

Lunch
Students will order their meal in the morning with their classroom teacher using the same process as they have in the past. 
There will be two options daily, a hot entree or a cold sandwich option.  
Staff will serve all components of lunch.
Students traveling to the lunch, will go one classroom at a  time.
To maintain social distancing, 2/3 of the classrooms will go to the cafeteria, while the other third of the classrooms will have their meals delivered to the classroom.

Secondary Hybrid Specifics
Breakfast
Breakfast at the middle school, will be available as a "Grab & Go" option, with students picking-up food from the cafeteria and taking it back to the classroom.

Breakfast at the high school, will be available as a "Grab & Go" option, with students picking-up food from the breakfast cart, which will be located as students enter the building in the commons and taking it back to the classroom.

Lunch
Students will order their meal during their 1st hour class using a link that will be shared on the student website. 
Middle school students will have three options:  a hot entree, a sandwich option or a salad option.
High school students will have five options:  a hot entree, pizza, hot sandwich, cold sandwich, or a salad option.
Staff will serve all components of lunch, no ala carte will be available at this time. 

Students ordering a lunch, will be dismissed to the cafeteria in intervals, to practice social distancing, pick-up their lunch, and take it back to their classroom.

Distance Learning Students
Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase or for qualifying free and reduced students who are participating in the the Hastings Online Academy. Breakfast and Lunches must be ordered for a week at a time, but you can only order what you need.

Families who wish to participate in the breakfast/lunch program while distance learning will have to order lunches online by 12:00 noon on the Thursday for meals for the following week.

Meals for distance learning students will not be able to be delivered. 
Meals will be available for contactless pick-up between 9:00 - 11:00 on Mondays at the District Office.  

At Hastings, we want to ensure that all students have access to meals. Therefore, we will be offering multiple options for families and students. For the 2020-21 school year, The Food Service Program is mandated by state and federal law to run under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and National School Breakfast Program (NSBP), as we have in the past.  The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) that provided free meals to all this spring and summer will end August 31, 2020.  Hastings Public Schools is encouraging families to apply for meal benefits to further assist, if desired at:  https://frapps.horizonsolana.com/welcome

Elementary

Teachers will keep track of students ordering a meal when eating in school. Parents can log onto the parent portal to sign students up for meals when not in school. Elementary students can pick up pre-ordered meals that parents order ahead of time to bring home. For example, Monday and Tuesday child eats at school.  Parent can sign up for meals to be brought home for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday by Monday at noon in the parent portal. The student will pick up the meals signed up for and bring them home on Tuesday.

Secondary

At the secondary school, students can sign up for meals eaten that day by the end of first hour by going to the Hastings School website and going to the student portal. The student would then go to their school and click on the link to sign up for a meal for that day. Secondary students can also go to the student portal on the Hastings school webpage to order meals on either Monday or Thursday to pick up and bring home for at home learning school days.

Areas of Concern

We are doing everything we can to make safe, nutritious meals for students to eat every day. Here are some of the new “safe” practices we have implemented;

Milk

To reduce waste, only 1% Milk will be offered for breakfast and Skim Chocolate for Lunch. If you should need a lactose-free option, please send a parent note with this request. Other milk substitutes require the completion of the “Lactose Intolerance” form, which is located below or on the Food Service website.

Peanut-Tree Nut Allergies

Since students will be eating breakfast and lunch in the classroom; please be mindful in what you pack with your child. The menus planned for K-12 will not contain peanuts/tree nuts, however Food Service can’t control lunches being packed from home.

Hastings Online Academy

Parents or students can go to the Hastings Online Academy portal and order meals that they would like. Orders are due by Thursday the week before for pickup on Monday at the district office from 9-11 am.
